“What?” you say. “Dress up your email newsletter? Is that, like, a thing?”
Yes! It’s my FAVORITE thing!
This is absolutely my best tip for writing newsletters (*takes bow*), and it’s sooooo easy.
It’s simply this: Ditch the snooze-worthy “hi” and “goodbye” from your newsletter.
Think about it. How many emails do you get every day that start with “Hi!” It gets boring, right? Personally, my eyes start to glaze over a bit when I see that day after day. I might even unsubscribe for that reason alone, because I never get past the first line.
I mean, it should be pretty obvious: switch it up.
Same goes for your signoff. While not as critical as your salutation, since it comes at the end rather than the beginning, it’s still important.
Luckily, I’m here for ya. Checklists for better hellos and goodbyes are available, for free, in the Leaf Library. You can subcribe down at the bottom for access, as well as daily newsletters to help you kick writing ass.
In the meantime …
When you dress up your newsletter, you do more than entertain.
See, if you vascillate all over the place, you’ll lose people. They might even wonder … um, who the hell are you?
You have to create a consistent experience within someone’s inbox, and that means consistently showing up with the same tone, style, level of humor and more.
That goes for hellos and goodbyes as well. While I think it’s fun to switch things up, it’s also nice to develop a trademark. You might do this at the end, since people expect reliable signoffs, and switch it up at the beginning when you’re first trying to grab their attention.
Try it, seriously.
Chances are you already have a strong idea of your own voice. Chances are equally good, however, that you’re more scattered in the use of that voice than you think. The only solution is to bring intention to the development of that voice.
Ditto instituting coolio greetings and signoffs in your newsletters.
Which, per always, I can help you do. *shrugs modestly*
It’s all there in the premium content, which you can gain instant access to by clicking that pretty image below. Just navigate to the file about creating a voice, download it and get started a-checkin’ those boxes. That’s it! Easy-peasy.
So find and use your voice, friend. You no longer have any excuse not to.
